We have visited a majority of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in the United States, but many of those were before we started this blog. Consequently, we don't have posts about them. In fact, we have to admit that we visited a few of them when we were children and had no idea what a UNESCO World Heritage site was. Or before UNESCO World Heritage

It encompasses nearly 600,000 square miles, which makes it one of the largest protected marine conservation areas in the world! While UNESCO sites include places with cultural significance, Mesa Verde is the only United States National Park dedicated to preserving something built by humans; the rest focus on protecting the natural environment. This park is unique because the culture that inhabited this area did so for seven hundred years, from around 550 to the late 1270s. Amid all these other aspects of South America is its own large set of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These sites are selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization based on their cultural, historical, scientific, or other significance. Here are ten must-see South American World Heritage Sites.
